Ron Oren, MD

    Ron M Oren, MD, joined Iowa City Heart Center, P.C. in November 2005. He serves as the Director of the Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension program at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.
    Dr Oren graduated from Moline High School, Moline, Illinois, and Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. He attended medical school at Rush Medical College in Chicago, and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Barnes Hospital, St Louis. His General Cardiology fellowship was completed at the University of Iowa, and was followed by an additional year of specialized fellowship training in Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. 
    Following training, Dr Oren was on faculty at the University of Iowa College of Medicine from 1993 until 2005. There he developed the Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program, serving as the Director from 1993 until 2005. Under his leadership, this program grew and became a nationally recognized leader in a variety of clinical areas. In addition, he developed the University of Iowa Pulmonary Hypertension Program in 1997 and served as the co-Director until 2005.

Dr Oren has earned the following awards:

  1. The James Harrick Award for Outstanding Medical Student, Rush Medical College
  2. The Henry Christensen Award for Outstanding Clinical Research, from the American Society of Clinical Research
  3. A "Teacher of the Year" award from the University of Iowa Internal Medicine Residency Training Program
  4. The Lewis January Award for Outstanding Teaching, University of Iowa Cardiology Fellowship

    Dr Oren has been active in clinical research focused on the development of new therapeutic options and strategies in heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. He has offered more than 40 manuscripts in these areas, and has written six book chapters. Dr Oren has been an active participant in over 50 clinical trials and has served on a variety of committees for these trials. He was selected for a variety of advisory groups to pharmaceutical companies, and has served on the NIH Clinical Trial Advisory Committee.
    Dr Oren has given numerous lectures on the diagnosis and therapy of heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, as well as a variety of issues regarding cardiac transplantation. He has been an invited speaker to several national conferences, including the American College of Cardiology Scientific Meetings.

He sees patients in the Iowa City, Ft Madison, and Mt Pleasant offices
